Would anyone know where I might have an old style veneer press made? I took a 2 week class in England this year. The instructor had a press with a single , fine threaded screw, approx. 1 1/2' X 2' total clamping area. It seemed much nicer to use than the vacumn press I'm using now, esp. for smaller pieces.

"I'm looking for a screw about 18" long and approx. 2" in diameter, with fine threads."

Tony,

I certainly missed that!  I should have said above that "I don't think you will be very successful in finding 2 inch in diameter steel veneer press screws - the kind with handle device, threaded collar and pressure plate."

Kent,
Given the price of 2" threaded rod, it would certainly be much more economical to use  press screws. I believe I purchased some nice veneer press screws from Grizzly a few years ago. They have the typical handle on one end and a small plate on the other end and a nut with bracket in the middle. Here is the one they list now, but mine are a little different.

Update: Actually after doing a little more research I think these are the ones I bought.

Woodcraft sells a veneer press screw for about $18 each.  I remember when I used a veneer press many years ago, the instructor indicated each screw should be 9 inches from each other.  However, if reading the latest edition of Fine Woodworking is an indicator the distance can be greater.
