4/0 steel wool should be the finest steel wool in America? Where would you get ultra fine 5 lbs rolls. The 4/0 I can get made in the USA is very coarse. Liberon 4/0 is fine but we should offer somethng here.

No I got 4/0 but it was closer to what I remember as 3/0. So I got some pads of 4/0 by a different manufacturer and the were the same. I ordered some Liberon 4/0 from the UK and it was much finer.

I use liberon 4/0 for finishing, i use any/big box store brands for anything else (stripping finish or polishing/cleaning metal). I have found that the common availible brands have, on occation, large slivers of "wool" hidden within the pad. I now always open, unfold the pad and inspect. Additionally Liberon claims to be oil free, Squeze the other companies pads between paper towels and you will find oil residue in the common availible pads.
Garrett wade once carried Bronze 4/0 wool, claimed it is to be used with water based finishes. They were not only finer but also softer and did not leave any strands to induce rust stains. I think that the nylon abrasive pads overtook them.
Have you tried using the sythetic pads? they do come in a finer grit, like 4/0 steel wool. An autobody supply store would carry a selection. I use the finest to apply oil finishes. once they are worn abit they leave a nice burnish to the surface.
