November 8, 2025 Meeting of Rock River Valley

You are reading the forum of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers — people who build and study American period furniture.

Membership brings the whole forum, the annual journal and quarterly magazine, the members’ gallery and workbench, and chapters across the country. About membership

As the new Chapter Leader, I would like to help energize the group to become what I believe it can be. The simple goal will be to offer worthwhile meetings having interesting and educational topics while also providing the opportunity to socialize with others having an interest in period furniture.

I would like to hold two meetings each year, probably in early May and early November. This should prevent any meetings from being affected by hazardous winter weather conditions.

The first meeting will be held on Saturday, November 8, from 9:15 am to 3:45 pm in Waunakee, Wisconsin (just a few miles north of Madison) in the Board Room of the Waunakee Library. This meeting room can very comfortably accommodate up to twenty people and offers us a flat screen TV on which we can project any PowerPoint presentations or photos that attendees may wish to share (please bring them on your laptop, which can be connected to the TV). In order to make the best use of our time, lunch will be ordered in. (Note: I have attached a photo of the room to this email – check out the huge, live-edge conference table!).

Before I set a specific agenda for this first meeting, I would like to hear from everyone who is interested in attending either this meeting or future meetings as to what direction you would like to see this group take. Below is a list of questions that I would ask that you give consideration to and reply to me no later than Friday, September 12.

Once I have received your input and arranged for any presentations, I will summarize your comments (anonymously) and report back to the group, along with an agenda for this first meeting. There will be no charge for attending the meeting, but you will need to pay for lunch at the meeting as you select your meal from the menu to be provided. If you prefer, or if you have dietary constraints, you can also bring in your own lunch and beverages.

Also, just in case you are not aware of the many other benefits of joining SAPFM, please see their website at www.sapfm.org for information. Access to the many articles in ”Pins & Tales”, the annual publication “American Period Furniture Journal”, free furniture plans by the late Philip Lowe as well as other members, and annual national meetings at places of interest to members are just a few of the many benefits members enjoy.

I hope to see you at the meeting in November. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me at whitnallgardens@tds.net at any time.

Cheers!

Mike Mason
New Rock River Valley Chapter Leader

Questions (please answer any or all questions):

1. In general, what would you like to get out of this group?

2. Are there any specific topics related to period furniture that would you like to see discussed?

3. Are there any presentations that you personally would like to make at a future meeting? Are you prepared to offer any of them at the November 8 meeting?

4. Besides having everyone BRIEFLY introduce themselves at the beginning of the meeting, and also a “show & tell” segment, are there other items that you would like to regularly include on the agenda?

5. What periods of furniture are of most interest to you? Is your interest from a historical viewpoint, or do you make, or perhaps plan to make, period furniture?

6. Is there anything else that you would like to suggest, or comment on, at this time?

7. For planning purposes, do you expect to attend the November 8 meeting? (Yes; Probably; Probably Not; or No)

8. Are you likely to attend a future meeting? (Yes; Probably; Probably Not; or No)

If this discussion was useful, there are twenty years of them here. Join SAPFM to take part — the forum, the journal, the magazine and the members’ gallery come with membership.
