I'm taking down two birch trees in my yard next week. They aren't really big enough to get any lumber from, but they do have crotches on the trunk and on some of the major branches. The tree diameters are about 8" and 10".

Should I try and mill the areas around the crotches for veneer? I'd like some of the veneer used on the card tables that I've always heard of as flame birch. Or would I just be wasting my time.

I would save the crotches and bandsaw them for veneer. You won't know if your time was wasted until you saw them and see what you get. Good luck,
Mike

I have done this several times and got very nice veneer.  I let it dry in the garage a couple of years before cutting it on my bandsaw.
